The first sod has finally been turned at South Beach marking the commencement of construction for the biggest single development in the Bundaberg region’s history. After more than 10 years of planning the day arrived on Friday 19th August with more than 190 people gathering to celebrate the historic day for the community of Elliott Heads.

Groundbreaking performed by Stephen Bennett, State Member for Burnett and The Honorable Keith Pitt, Federal Minister for Hinkler.

The South Beach land that was once used for farming is now being transformed into the major $2 billion development that upon completion will have 2200 homes, a proposed retail centre and major supermarket, child care, proposed increased schooling, resort, aged care and more than 320 over-50s residences, as well as a research centre.

“It took me over 27 years to accumulate this land,” says Mr John Manera, Elliott Heads local, “And when I bought the last farm, I thought, well, maybe I could do something for the community here one day.”

The vision for South Beach has been overwhelmingly embraced with strong demand from buyers wishing to make the new community their home.

“Stage 1 was sold out in one day,” says Helen Blackburn, South Beach Development Director, “Our roads will be built in the coming three or four months and we should have our lots available to start building on shortly after we have completed Stage 1.”

South Beach is one of the last major beachside masterplanned developments on the east coast of Australia and will be a boom for the Bundaberg region as it continues to flourish into the future.

“The Bundaberg region is one of the best places in Queensland to live, work and raise a family. We’re seeing young families and retirees flock to our coastal communities with the region’s population steadily increasing over the last 10 years,” remarked Stephen Bennett, State Member for Burnett.

The research centre, set up by Burnett Mary Regional Group, will focus on the local eco-systems and managing the reef and the wetlands.

“We have international researchers that will be coming to work here so this will actually build jobs and economy,” explained Sheila Charlesworth, Burnett Mary Regional Group CEO.

With new house and land packages built by respected local builders from just $460,000 there’s never been a better time to build in the region.
